Almost every hour, new updates about the coronavirus are coming in from Germany and around the world. While schools in Germany are closed and borders are being shut, more and more people are feeling uncertain due to the current situation. In drugstores and pharmacies, hand disinfectants are sold out and are being traded online at exorbitant prices.
But is it really necessary to disinfect your hands to protect against the spread of the coronavirus, or is thorough handwashing with soap enough?
Health experts actually recommend using soap instead of disinfectant in this situation. Soap attacks the protective layer of the virus and removes it from the skin—without damaging the skin, as disinfectants can.
To protect yourself from viruses and other pathogens, thorough handwashing is one of the most effective and simplest measures. However, studies and surveys show that only around 40% of people in Germany wash their hands correctly according to the recommendations of the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA).
Here’s how to do it properly:
Step 1: Moisten your hands under running water. The temperature doesn’t matter.
Step 2: Lather your hands thoroughly with a mild soap. A liquid soap like Herbacin kamille Cream Soap, available in a hygienic and refillable dispenser, is especially suitable. Distribute the soap carefully over your hands, including between the fingers. The recommended duration is 20 seconds—about the time it takes to hum “Happy Birthday” twice.
Step 3: Rinse off the foam completely under running water and turn off the tap with your elbow.
Step 4: Dry your hands thoroughly with paper towels.
Step 5: Don’t forget to follow up with proper care. The Herbacin kamille Soft hand cream, which absorbs instantly and leaves your skin feeling silky smooth while providing optimal care, is especially recommended.
It’s that simple to effectively protect yourself from viruses in these times.
