Better Together: Working Out with Friends

“I really should exercise more!” Sound familiar? You’re not alone. That inner voice often wins when it comes to skipping a workout. Whether it’s cycling, jogging, walking, or swimming – it can be hard to motivate yourself after a long day. But there’s a simple solution: a little positive peer pressure.

It may sound tough at first, but it’s actually easy. Find one or more workout partners and get started together.

Finding the Right Partner

Choosing the right workout partner is key. If you’re just getting started, look for someone with a similar fitness level. This helps avoid frustration or feeling overwhelmed.

The same goes the other way around: if you’re already very fit, training with a beginner might slow you down and reduce motivation over time.

Choosing the Right Activity

Love being outdoors, want to improve your endurance, and prefer moderate exercise? Walking or jogging could be perfect for you – and you’ll likely find plenty of people in your circle to join you.

If you prefer something more fast-paced, mountain biking might be the right fit. Whether beginner or experienced, ask around among friends or family and plan rides together. Exploring trails is always more fun as a team.

If joint-friendly activities are important to you, consider swimming or aqua fitness. Even though these aren’t typical group sports, going together still makes the experience more enjoyable.

Working Out with Friends at the Gym

Studies show that at least 50% of gym members rarely or never use their membership. But when you plan to go with friends – whether for a class or a workout session – you’re much more likely to follow through. Use that positive group dynamic to your advantage and find a workout buddy.

Why not take it a step further? Plan a relaxing reward afterward, like spending time together in the spa area.

Staying Consistent

Once you’ve found the right partner and activity, the key is consistency.

Set fixed workout appointments and add them to your calendar. Agree on specific days and times to meet. You can even introduce a lighthearted “penalty” for last-minute cancellations – this helps keep everyone accountable.

It’s also important to set shared goals. Whether it’s completing a 10K walk or training for a marathon together, having a goal keeps you focused and motivated.
