Open Sesame! What Your Handbag Says About You

Whether small or large, leather or fabric, designer or everyday – we women love our handbags. That’s why they’re always by our side. At work, while shopping, at dinner, or in a bar – our handbag is a loyal companion. But did you know it can also reveal quite a bit about its owner?

We took a closer (and slightly playful) look at the topic and put together a few fun observations. Let’s see what your handbag might say about you.

From the Outside: What Does Your Bag Reveal?

The shape and size of a handbag often say a lot about its owner. A large bag or shopper usually signals someone who likes to be prepared for anything. Tissues, band-aids, spare tights, and snacks – everything is likely inside.

Women who carry only small handbags fall into the “easygoing minimalist” category. They stick to the essentials and trust they can buy or borrow anything else if needed.

A shiny designer bag with a bold logo is often chosen by those who enjoy showcasing their lifestyle. It’s all about making a statement.

A structured leather bag with room for a laptop typically belongs to a business-minded woman who moves from meeting to meeting. Inside: important documents, a makeup pouch for touch-ups, and something to write with.

The Perfect (Defense) Posture?

Even the way you carry your handbag says a lot about your mood and personality.

Crossbody bags are practical and modern. They leave your hands free and allow for easy movement – ideal for shopping or прогулки. Women who prefer this style often value comfort and have an active lifestyle.

But even here, details matter. Wearing the bag close to the body can signal a desire for security – everything is within reach and well protected. Wearing it loosely or even toward the back suggests a more carefree, relaxed attitude.

Carrying a handbag in the crook of the arm often conveys confidence and openness – but also a desire to showcase the bag itself. After all, that arm isn’t doing much else besides holding a stylish accessory (and maybe a drink).

Some women prefer to hold their bag by short handles directly in front of the body. This often suggests the bag is particularly valuable – or meant to appear that way. It’s a subtle way of saying: “Look what I have.”

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

If we asked you to empty your handbag right now – would you feel completely at ease or slightly nervous?

Italian “handbag therapist” Rosanna Pierantognetti (yes, that’s actually a thing) has analyzed the contents of more than 1,000 handbags and discovered some fascinating patterns. We found similar insights in our own office survey.

1. There’s a basic handbag setup

Wallet, keys, smartphone, and a few beauty essentials are must-haves for most women. Lipstick, strong>lip balm, and hand cream are almost always included.

2. Hygiene products can feel embarrassing

Items like tampons or panty liners often cause unnecessary embarrassment – even though they’re completely normal essentials.

3. Your bag reflects your personality

Organized individuals tend to carry planners, neatly packed pouches, and charging cables. More spontaneous types might have receipts, candy wrappers, or used tissues tucked away. And then there are those who are prepared for anything: snacks, sanitizer, water bottles, a mini first-aid kit – sometimes even a pocket knife. These women are ready for every situation, both personally and professionally.

So, if we took a look at your handbag – what would it reveal about you?
