Oh oh, sun: What helps with age spots?

Pigment spots are by no means just a sign of aging. One of the main causes is UV exposure. But the good news is: there are ways to not only prevent hyperpigmentation, but also reduce its appearance.

Does this sound familiar? You enjoy a beautiful sunny day, and instead of an even, healthy-looking complexion, uneven brown patches appear on your skin. These may be pigment spots.

In general, skin tanning is a natural defense mechanism designed to absorb harmful UV radiation. The darker the skin, the higher the natural melanin content.

But this natural protection should never be overestimated — when UV radiation is strong, sunscreen is an absolute must. And the rule of thumb is: the fairer the skin, the more sensitive it is to UV exposure.

UV rays stimulate the production of melanin in the skin — and pigment spots are simply areas where melanin accumulates in higher concentrations. And it doesn’t take hours in the sun for this to happen; regular exposure to UV radiation is enough.

What types of hyperpigmentation exist?

Liver spots, age spots, freckles, pregnancy spots — the terms are as varied as the possible forms and causes of hyperpigmentation. One factor, however, always plays a role: the sun. Frequent, unprotected exposure to UV radiation promotes the development of all kinds of hyperpigmentation. In addition to distinct dark spots, larger areas of discoloration — known as melasma — can also occur.

Liver spots (also called moles) and freckles are usually present at birth or develop in early childhood. This is partly due to genetic factors and skin type. Over time, however, the level of UV exposure also plays a major role. Liver spots that appear later in life can, for example, be the result of childhood sunburns.

So-called “pregnancy spots” are usually hormone-related. Increased estrogen levels stimulate melanin production, which can lead to pigment changes.

“Age spots” as the name suggests, appear as part of the natural skin-aging process. But this doesn’t mean they only affect the elderly. Especially in women, a hormonally driven tendency toward pigmentation or melasma can already occur in the 40s, as skin regeneration slows and the skin becomes more sensitive to light-induced damage.

Medications and skin injuries can also encourage the development of pigment spots. Some medications increase the skin’s sensitivity to light, such as St. John’s wort preparations or certain birth-control pills. Skin injuries — for example burns, scars, or post-acne marks — can react particularly sensitively to sunlight. The skin produces more melanin than necessary, and dark spots are the result.

What helps with age spots?

Hyperpigmentation is often harmless from a medical standpoint. Still, pigment spots and melasma can strongly affect personal well-being. The same is true for moles and birthmarks. It is important, however, to keep a close eye on your skin. Any unusual changes — such as extreme discoloration or inflammation — should always be evaluated by a dermatologist.

Only a few people are lucky enough for pigment spots or melasma to fade completely on their own. Mild cases can lighten naturally over time, becoming barely visible. However, the more UV exposure the affected areas receive, the more intense the darkening will become.

Particularly pronounced pigment spots or large moles are typically treated by dermatologists using laser procedures or intensive chemical peels, since deeper layers of the skin are involved in these cases.

If you have milder discolorations or want to actively prevent hyperpigmentation, you can use targeted skincare products. First and foremost, this includes prevention through proper UV protection — not just on long days at the beach, but also in everyday life. In addition, there are various active ingredients that can help reduce hyperpigmentation.

Which active ingredients and skincare products help with pigment spots?

Caring for skin affected by pigment spots and melasma requires two things: bringing melanin production back into balance and supporting skin regeneration to gently reduce the intensity of discoloration.

Cleansing and exfoliation for hyperpigmentation

Only properly cleansed skin can fully absorb active ingredients — so start every routine with your usual cleansing gel, cleansing milk, or cleansing oil! To support skin regeneration, a gentle exfoliant is beneficial. It removes dead skin cells and prepares the skin to better absorb targeted actives used to address concerns such as pigment spots. Important: Always use exfoliants in the evening and avoid sun exposure afterward. Intensive chemical peels should be performed exclusively by dermatologists or licensed estheticians.

Vitamin C – A multitasker in skincare

Vitamin C protects the skin against oxidative stress caused by free radicals, making it a favorite in skincare. It is also believed to inhibit the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for melanin production. This makes Vitamin C an excellent ingredient for helping prevent hyperpigmentation.

Langsat Tree Extract to reduce pigment spots

The Langsat Tree — still an insider tip in Europe but well-known in Asia, not least for its delicious fruit — provides an extract from its leaves that can both prevent and actively reduce pigment spots. Like Vitamin C, Langsat Extract helps regulate the enzyme tyrosinase. By influencing this enzyme, it reduces melanin levels in affected skin areas, actively diminishing the visibility of pigment spots.

Herbacin Skin Solutions Age Spot Primer – Gentle and effective for hyperpigmentation

The Herbacin Skin Solutions Age Spot Primer combines effective active ingredients with gentle, well-tolerated skincare. Langsat Extract and modern broad-spectrum UV filters help reduce pigment spots and protect the skin from further hyperpigmentation.

The triple plant formula of aloe vera, chamomile, and marigold soothes the skin, nourishes it, and supports its natural regeneration. Thanks to its lightweight texture, the Herbacin Age Spot Primer absorbs quickly and is ideal for use as a daily moisturizer.
