Digital Detox – Just Switch Off!

How often have you used your smartphone today? Probably more often than you realize. For most of us, our smartphone is a constant companion from the moment we wake up until we go to sleep—without it, we feel incomplete.

Of course, smartphones have become indispensable in both modern work life and everyday life. Emails, appointments, contacts, news, shopping, books, and music—all of this is stored on this small “computer” in our pocket. No matter where you are, you can access any information within seconds and are reachable 24/7. But is this constant availability and continuous use really necessary?

What happens if you don’t check your emails immediately or don’t read the latest news right away? Probably nothing!

So why not treat yourself to a digital detox? The term may be relatively new, but it already describes a trend embraced by many people. Especially those with demanding jobs notice how beneficial it is to take a break from smartphones, smartwatches, PCs, and TVs—no matter how long or short that break may be.

However, the path isn’t always easy. We are deeply rooted in habits: checking emails regularly, scrolling through news or social media, and always being available. So if you want to start a digital detox, there’s one key requirement: self-discipline!

Getting started…

Why not begin your day without your smartphone? Do you usually use it as an alarm clock? Then switch to a classic alarm clock instead. This allows you to keep your phone out of the bedroom entirely—reducing the temptation to check emails first thing in the morning or scroll through content right before falling asleep.

If you manage to keep your smartphone outside the bedroom overnight, you may even live and sleep healthier. The radiation emitted by smartphones can affect the body, and the blue light from the display can significantly disrupt your sleep.

No distractions

Do you have notification sounds turned on for emails, SMS, or messaging apps? For your digital detox, this can be a real obstacle, as it constantly tempts you to pick up your phone. Start by turning off notifications and pop-ups for a day. Instead, check your phone only at set times—perhaps once every hour. If that works well, gradually increase the intervals. Eventually, you might even manage a full smartphone-free day, for example on the weekend.

Just wait!

Do you often have waiting times—on the train or before an appointment? Use this time consciously for yourself and leave your smartphone or laptop in your bag. Read a newspaper, review meeting notes, or simply make plans for the weekend.

Nurture real-life relationships

Does this sound familiar? You’re at a family gathering, enjoying an evening with friends, having dinner with your partner, or spending time with your children—yet you keep glancing at your phone and replying to messages whenever you get the chance. If so, you’re the perfect candidate for a digital detox. Do you really need to be available to the digital world in those moments? Probably not! Instead, take a break from your devices—for the sake of your friends, family, or partner. If you’re expecting an urgent work message, set a specific time to briefly check your phone. After that, return your full attention to the people around you—they’ll appreciate it!

Once you’ve started your digital detox and established a routine, you’ll find it easier and easier to simply switch off from time to time!
