Should I or shouldn’t I? Now or maybe later? Will this even work?
Every day, we are confronted with situations that require decisions. Change is the order of the day. Do we give in to the fear of change, or do we have the courage to explore new paths?
Many people are dissatisfied with their lives—or at least parts of them—but lack the strength or the will to change something. Yet change is something positive, because it means improving something and making life a little easier.
Still, many people shy away from taking that first step. Often, what’s missing is a clear plan, the decisive push, or simply the time to think things through calmly. And in the end, we always find a reason why it’s better to stay within the familiar.
The Problem with Well-Meant Advice
Do you know the opposite of “good”? Exactly—“well meant.” Very often, when we seek support for a change, we encounter resistance. Since many people fear the unknown, it can easily happen that you face discouragement in the form of well-meant advice like: “I’m not sure if that’s a good idea.” These very comments can become the first hurdle to positive change.
And suddenly, all those “what ifs” and “buts” that you had already dismissed come creeping back.
But even Seneca knew: “Nothing prevents us from reaching happiness more than conforming to the opinions of others instead of our own convictions.”
That’s why it’s so important to ignore outside opinions, step out of your comfort zone, and take that first step.
Natural Growth Through Change
Humans and their bodies are constantly subject to change. Skin becomes wrinkled, gravity takes its toll—whether we like it or not. But personal development should be seen as an opportunity. Our childhood and teenage years are full of change—we constantly reinvent ourselves. At some point, however, things slow down. That’s the natural cycle—and it’s perfectly fine.
Yet all too often, we get stuck in the treadmill of everyday life, clinging to the apparent security of familiar discomfort, and prefer to complain that things can’t go on like this instead of initiating change.
We need to consciously counteract this, leave our comfort zone, and become the captain of our own lives again.
Inner Barriers
What is holding us back from taking the next step? Is it others who unsettle or intimidate us? Is it the global economy that constantly fills us with fear? In most cases, we stand in our own way. Letting go is one of the hardest things to do because it confronts us with the fear of the unknown. After all, in our minds, trust is often linked to the belief that “control is better.”
A Question of Mindset
“We reap what we sow.” This is the natural law of cause and effect. We are what we think—and that is what we encounter in life.
Why do we keep facing the same situations over and over again, as if in “Groundhog Day”? We are confronted with recurring challenges until we finally learn the lesson. The question is: do we choose the easy way or the hard way? Even if we’ve always done something the same way, life may eventually call us to take a different path.
The Courage to Take New Steps
“How do I know if this is the right path?”
Trying is better than studying! How many times did we fall as children before we learned to walk? What if we started seeing the world through a child’s eyes again? Every minute offers something new to discover, new steps to take. The hopeful person may not even know where to begin, while the hopeless one sees no point at all.
But answering the question “How do I want to shape my life?” can lead you in a completely new direction. Which path will you choose?
Over time, our perspective has drifted further and further away from our inner voice. At some point, we can no longer see the forest for the trees. While we keep searching, we forget that everything we need is already within us. We look everywhere—except inside ourselves. Yet even the biggest problems can have very simple solutions. And still, we often doubt our own intuition: it can’t possibly be that easy, can it?
For those who have become experts at collecting problems, there is good news: the bigger the problem, the greater the gift hidden within it. In every conflict or difficult situation, you can ask yourself: what gift is hidden here? And what have I (for)given in this situation? Trust your intuition.
Are you ready to accept and love whatever comes your way? In both small and big ways, our challenges act like a compass, guiding us toward our next steps.
Fear of change? Where the fear is—that’s where the path leads!
What would the world be like if we had the courage to set new signs every day? And what difference would that make?
