This year’s summer is showing its best side. Temperatures well above 30°C are often only bearable while sunbathing at the lake or at the outdoor pool. The holiday season is also in full swing—highways towards the sea or the mountains are just as crowded as the airplanes heading south. No wonder, since most people prefer to spend their free time outdoors in summer, especially in warm weather. Here, they enjoy the pleasant feeling and the gentle tan that the power of the sun leaves on the skin.
Do you feel the same way? If so, you probably know how quickly that light tan can turn into a sunburn if you’re not properly protected. But how much protection is necessary—and what should you do if you do get sunburned? We’ll explain in our short sun protection guide.
How long can you stay outdoors without sun protection?
Every body has a natural self-protection time against UV radiation. How long this lasts depends mainly on your skin type. Do you have fair skin and blonde hair? Then your natural protection time is around 20 minutes—significantly shorter than someone with darker skin and brown or black hair. But regardless of your skin type, you should always make sure to use proper sun protection beyond this natural limit.
What SPF should your sunscreen have?
A good sunscreen should have an SPF of at least 30—preferably 50. Depending on the SPF, your natural protection time is extended after application. For example, using SPF 30 increases your protection time by 30 times.
How much sunscreen do you need?
To be fully protected, you should apply about 30 grams of sunscreen to your body. Since you probably won’t measure this with a scale, you can remember that this equals roughly three tablespoons. Of course, you should reapply sunscreen after swimming and at the latest after three hours of sun exposure to ensure optimal protection.
Do you need additional protection?
Especially around midday, you should protect yourself from direct sunlight, as the UV index is at its highest. In general, during strong sun exposure, you should also wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your scalp and eyes, as they are also heavily affected by UV radiation.
What should you do if you get sunburned?
First of all: get out of the sun! Gently cool the affected skin and avoid further exposure. For quick relief, you can apply a light aloe vera gel—it cools the skin and provides moisture. For mild sunburn, Herbacin kamille Body Lotion can also help soothe the skin. In addition, make sure to drink plenty of fluids to hydrate your body from within.
If you notice blistering or experience symptoms such as headaches or fever, you should consult a doctor.
Now that you know the theory, it’s up to you: take care of yourself and your skin, and protect your health by using proper sun protection against excessive UV radiation.
